Ajna Chakra: Awakening Intuition Beyond the Ego
The Ajna Chakra, often called the third eye, is the sixth energy center in the body’s chakra system. Representing intuition, it is often overshadowed or blocked by the ego. When ego takes the lead, rooted in fear, intuition is silenced, and rational thought dominates. In today’s world, many people tend to ignore their inner guidance, allowing their minds to take control.
I like to ask a simple yet profound question: Are you your mind?
This question often sparks a moment of reflection. Some confidently say yes, while others hesitate or reply no. For those who identify themselves with their mind, I follow up with another question: Who are you?
At first, they may respond with labels: their name, gender, or roles in life. Yet, when I point out that these are external identities, many get stuck. What’s most intriguing is that even those who struggle with anxiety, depression, addiction, anger, or sadness never mention these as part of their identity. When I highlight this, the realization dawns:
If you were truly your mind, wouldn’t you identify with the anxiety, worry, or anger it produces?
At this point, many pause, staring as the deeper truth begins to surface. I then explain:
“These emotions—anger, depression, worry, addiction—are impermanent. They are products of the mind, not who you are. When you know they are from the mind and not you, don’t you already have the answer to my question: Are you your mind?”
This shift often opens their hearts. With clarity, they reply: I am not my mind.
Understanding the Monkey Mind
Many people don’t realize that the mind is often referred to as the “monkey mind.” This term reflects the restless, jumping nature of the mind—always moving from thought to thought, often causing confusion and distraction. By recognizing this, it becomes easier to stop identifying with the mind. The monkey mind is a tool, not your essence.
The mind and ego are closely tied, operating from a place of fear, control, and reaction. In contrast, intuition flows from the higher self, offering peace, clarity, and a sense of purpose. The higher self doesn’t dwell on anger or anxiety but gently guides you toward understanding and forgiveness.
The Ajna Chakra and Its Influence
When the Ajna Chakra is blocked, symptoms like migraines, sinus pressure, or tension behind the eyes may arise. Emotionally, it can feel like being trapped in a loop of overthinking or fear. However, when the Ajna Chakra is activated, intuition strengthens, and clarity replaces confusion.
A Practice to Connect with Your Higher Self
If you’re unsure whether your thoughts stem from intuition or the ego, try this simple exercise:
1. Sit comfortably in a chair with your back straight and feet grounded.
2. Close your eyes and take a deep breath, inhaling into your abdomen. Exhale fully through your mouth.
3. Repeat this deep breathing cycle a few times: inhale deeply, hold for a count of 4–5 seconds, and exhale fully.
4. When you feel calm, silently ask yourself a question, such as: Was this thought my intuition?
5. Listen to the very first answer that arises—it often comes from your higher self. Anything that follows is likely the monkey mind trying to take over.
By learning to quiet the mind and trust your intuition, you begin to align with your true self.
For example, if you feel tension in your left shoulder, ask yourself: Who or what am I carrying on my shoulders? The first answer you hear is often a deep truth your higher self wants you to know.
The Ajna Chakra invites us to move beyond the monkey mind, reconnect with intuition, and discover the wisdom of our higher self.
